Just enough Obsidian

The march towards a big, awesome Obsidian vault continues.
I’m just about to reach 150 notes in Obsidian. I’m having an excellent time writing and capturing ideas on all sorts of concepts.
I’m also starting to feel a shift in how I compile information. I’m becoming more comprehensive. After the 2024 election, I decided to go back and document some of the policy positions of the candidates. As I did that, I felt a natural pull to go back into the last fifty years of US history and document different transitionary periods of US legislature. I’m enjoying documenting this and learning about it on my own terms - not through the media, but digging through papers, doing my own research, and writing about it.
Here’s a few notes and high-level concepts that I’m thinking about as I build out my vault. This isn’t an Obsidian tutorial: just my honest opinion on where my vault is at, and what I’m thinking about as I continue to build it.
Temporal notes
One interesting thing I’ve experimenting with is temporality in Obsidian. What I mean is - I can document something that happened in the year 1999. I can say “This happened in December of 1999.” That’s a valuable insight - but what if we actually tagged that year as a note in itself? For instance, here’s a non-controversial (e.g. not US politics) doc I’m writing on Tim Duncan:
Each year is a note itself! And because Obsidian is great at finding unlinked mentions, having a doc called 1997
will organically find any notes that have the text “1997” in them, so I can link them as needed.
I’m still experimenting with this. It does feel like something that could be fixed with a plugin, but I’m hesitant to introduce additional process just for this (see “Plugins” later on). Right now, there is a lot of extra pages being generated in the Graph View, particularly for years that I haven’t made real pages for, yet. Luckily, you can turn off rendering these “empty pages” in the Graph View, which makes it easier for me to understand how my information is actually managed.
Graph View
I am developing a nuanced opinion on Obsidian’s Graph View. I think most people use it as a way to try and flex on other people on Reddit or 𝕏. This is a stupid way to think about your own learning. The amount of data, or notes in your vault, is not particularly relevant or interesting. I’m impressed by two things:
- The rate of growth - how many new notes are you creating? e.g. are you learning
- The rate of connectivity - are you generating connected ideas?
I like these metrics because they highlight what Obsidian is quite good at: backlinking, and relating ideas. Organic discovery of connections. And being an awesome place to capture ideas without too much friction.
The Graph View is becoming a very interesting way to identify bottlenecks in this process, particularly on connectivity.
A few times, even just in my first week of capturing ideas again in Obsidian, I’ve used the Graph View as a way to identify orphaned notes. Concepts that I was clearly interested enough in to add them to the vault, but not enough yet that I’ve expanded on the ideas in it. That’s an actual useful feature, beyond the dick-measuring contest of “look how big my graph is”.1
Themes
I think the Minimal theme is a great starting point for basically every Obsidian user. The two plugins that are an offshoot of it - Minimal Theme Settings and Style Settings - make it easy to dial in any config you want.
One thing that Minimal does well that most other themes don’t appear to do is flat header styles. I really don’t like when an <h1>
or <h2>
header is massive compared to the standard body text. Minimal keeps things flat, just using tasteful spacing as needed.
I use Atkinson Hyperlegible for all text in my vault, and JetBrains Mono for code. It’s formatted… just like this website! And I think it looks pretty good.
There is a real problem in the community with aesthetics. Simply put: it doesn’t fucking matter. How your vault looks is not important. The design or styling of the vault should be unobtrusive. And if someone is spending a ton of time adding Notion-style graphics to their Obsidian pages… I don’t trust that you’re actually doing valuable work capturing ideas and learning. Sorry!
Plugins
It’s very easy to get overloaded with plugins in Obsidian. There are a lot of very good ones. I only add plugins when I think they’re going to genuinely be useful to me every day. Otherwise, I can get by manually.
That includes some of the most common ones - things like daily notes, for instance, I actually don’t like daily notes, and don’t find them useful. I would bet 80-90% of Obsidian setups have that plugin installed, and the vast majority of them don’t use it. Plugins like that add a ton of clutter to your command list (⌘+P), your sidebar, and with the default config, it will actually generate notes automatically for you, even if you don’t fill them out. What a mess!
The Template plugin is another one. I don’t template my notes. Maybe I will in the future, but I know that I would get deep into making templates… for the sake of making templates. Very silly.

Linting
This is a recent discovery I’ve made. The Linter plugin is a great way to automate linting your notes. This enforces consistency across your notes, which can make reading and editing notes a lot easier.
I installed it and set it up to run on save. The main thing is does is very aggressively set spacing across my notes. For instance, the below note:

It’s quite useful once you have it set up. This has been a big game changer for my vault. As a programmer, I rely on linting all the time in my Neovim config. The idea of linting my notes is a no-brainer!
Dataview
I am very cautiously exploring Dataview. I know a lot of people in the community are very enthusiastic about it. I think it is very cool - but easy to over-invest time and energy into.
I don’t want my notes to be programatically generated. Anything I’m writing in my notes should be organic, at least to a reasonable extent2, and automating note output isn’t particularly useful to me.
One exception is “index”-style pages. With the Homepage plugin, you can create a default page that opens when you launch Obsidian, or when you close other notes. I use this “Index” page to show how many notes I’ve created, as well as a listing of the most recently created and updated notes:
Automation
Every page I write has two automatically updated pieces of YAML frontmatter: created
and updated
. While Obsidian has this functionality already, it is based on the timestamps of the actual Markdown file. I suspect that depending on your sync setup, this is not a desirable way to implement these timestamps.
Instead, I use the “Update frontmatter modified date” plugin for this. It automatically updates the frontmatter for any file as you create and save it. This is just enough automation to be useful to me, without being too heavy-handed.
Conclusion
My Obsidian setup keeps changing. As I dump more info into it, I want it to remain flexible and light. I want to be able to capture all the information I care about, and make use of features like “Unlinked mentions” to organically discover connections between content.
I’m really enjoying using Obsidian. I’ve tried it many times, but this might really be the first time it is heavily clicking for me.

An exception to this is if I’m chatting with AI about a topic. I will include the prompt, and the output, as a “primary source” for whatever I’m writing about. But I’ll still write a summary in my own words, and that’s the valuable part. I’m very confused why people are excited to generate AI text as a note in Obsidian. It seems counter-productive to the idea of building a second brain, if you aren’t even creating the output yourself. How are you supposed to remember it or internalize it? ↩
