A logical naming convention for network devices
With 40+ active clients in my network UI (using Unifi), I've spent a non-trivial amount of time thinking about how to sort them.
I've landed on this format as a logical first step towards client sorting:
BRAND - SUBPRODUCT (OWNER) (OTHER NOTES)
Some examples below:
The reason for this may be a "me" thing: I think by brand. My Amazon Echo devices aren't "Living Room Echo" - they're "Amazon Echo - Living Room".
I think this is a reasonable and scalable logical sorting order for clients. Every few weeks, I will log in to the dashboard and make sure everything is named, including new smart home devices. Some clients have close enough default naming that I keep them as-is, until I do one of these naming sessions.
